GalleryWhite was opened in 1989 by Sofia Anastasiadi, a former curator at the National Gallery of Athens who, after eleven years inside a public institution, wanted to work directly with living artists at the scale of a single room and a single conversation. She bought a quiet ground-floor townhouse on Skoufa Street — at the time still a residential pocket of Kolonaki — stripped the cement render back to the original Pendelic marble, painted the four rooms a single shade of soft cream, and opened with a debut by the painter Yannis Vrettakos.
